PUBLIC COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION MOBILITY

RECOMMENDED IMPROVEMENTS

Note: Red italics denote suggestions rated “Fatally Flawed”

Mass Transit:

    General

  • Incorporate school bus system with the public bus system and teach children to use the mass transit system.
  • Make mass transit travel times competitive with auto travel times.
  • Give incentives to get people to use mass transit.
  • Build a high speed transit system with limited stops.

    Long Island Rail Road

  • The LIRR should run more off-peak trains.
  • The LIRR should provide more intra-island service.
  • Railroad and bus schedules should be coordinated.
  • Re-open closed LIRR stations (e.g., Center Moriches).
  • Improve bus connections to the LIRR stations.
  • Reduce parking spaces at the LIRR stations to encourage alternative modes of travel.
  • The LIRR should operate single-car "scoot" service during the midday to accommodate intra-island travel.
  • The clearance height in Penn Station cannot accommodate freight trains.
  • Free railroad and bus trips should be offered to encourage transit use.
  • The LIRR should improve the customer information system (e.g., information about service delays).
  • Improve security at the LIRR stations.
  • Make train trips more comfortable (e.g., temperature, seating).
  • Maintain reasonable transit fares.
  • Improve comfort level on platforms (e.g., shelters, canopies, seating).
  • Provide more frequent service to the east end of Long Island.
  • Offer bicycle cars on weekend trains during warm weather months.
  • Install high level platforms on "East End" stations.
  • Provide north/south connections.
  • Increase rail capacity on the LIRR (e.g., install switches to allow express trains).

Long Island Bus

  • LI Bus should investigate the use of electric buses.
  • Better information about bus service is needed (e.g., schedules, routes).
  • Bus schedules and route maps should be posted at all bus stops.
  • Information regarding local bus routes should be provided to each town or neighborhood.

Roadway

  • Improve highway signage. Upcoming exits should be listed in advance of the location.
  • Build roadways parallel to existing highways to ease congestion (e.g., parallel to the Southern State Parkway).
  • Educate the trucking industry to provide better travel information to truck drivers (e.g., maps, specific directions, destination address).
  • Improve street signage (e.g., use larger street-name signs).
  • Improve roadway accident response times.
  • Designate roadside pull-off areas to minimize traffic congestion after accidents.
  • Require push bumpers on police cars to facilitate quick removal of accident vehicles from the roadway.
  • The proposed lane width, under the bridges, in the HOV project may be too narrow and causes additional congestion.
  • Prohibit school buses from the Parkways and Expressways.

General

  • New York State should encourage large employers to relocate on Long Island.
  • Promote the use of smaller cars for local travel.
  • Require responsive taxi service.
  • Install people movers at node points (e.g., airports, shopping centers) that can accommodate persons with packages. This would facilitate peripheral parking lots.
  • Increase parking at node points.
  • Build a privately financed bridge or tunnel from Sunken Meadow Park to Connecticut (Norwalk).
  • Install and maintain sidewalks to promote pedestrian activities.
  • Encourage business-owned vanpool services.
  • Promote a program that encourages odd/even driving days.
